Many people still don't know that the fightings did not start on the 8th of August. On the first and second August of 2008 heavy artillery was fired against georgian villages and police officers. The scope of the artillery fire was so heavy that not even the head of russian so called peace forces could deny it any longer. Therefore, on the 4th August Marat Khulakhmetov acknowledged in his document that indeed georgian positions were bombarded by ossetian auxilliary forces (who themselves were russian funded). This is an often overseen but tremendously important russian document, as it clarifies who transformed the war into the active phase. By the way, when Georgia defended itself a couple days later, ossetian civilians had already left the region of Tskhinvali, which is why the georgian defense was NOT a breach of humanitarian law, because there were no civilians anymore and secondly the town was used to fire against georgian positions and therefore had lost its protected status. The ethnic ossetian FSB affiliated Vladimir Sanakoev confirmed in an interview in 2019 with the Channel Studio Re, that Saakshvili-Merabishvili pursued a completly peaceful policy against separatist entities, which angered Kokoity.
