Civil society, cultural and minority rights, democratic values, press freedom and environmental resources in India are under growing stress since the Hindu nationalist goverment of Narendra Modi took power in 2014. Yet the country is being courted by Western governments as a global counterbalance to an assertive China.

But the growing economic and political interdependence between India and the West make it critical to discuss the human rights, environmental, and civil society violations that are largely overlooked due to strategic interests.
This discussion wants to highlight the challenges and experiences of reporting in India from climate crisis to culture and the rights of sexual and gender minorities. Spotlighting the cracks in Western perceptions of „the largest democracy in the world“ we discuss how India is developing and what it is developing into.
Guests:
🐾 Kennith Rosario is a freelance journalist, former cultural editor and critic of The Hindu (Mumbai). He is currently working with taz as a German Chancellor Fellow, writing on gender, sexuality, queerness, human rights, and cinema in India, Germany, and the UK.
🐾 Monika Mondal is a freelance journalist in New-Delhi with a focus on environmental science and society. Her work has appeared in both Indian and international media including The Guardian, Undark, The Third Pole, The Diplomat, HT livemint, Caravan, Aljazeera and many more.
